Laser Equipment and Technology Department was established in 1977 to provide education in the field of optical-electronic and laser instrument-making.
The Department trains engineers developing and manufacturing modern optical, optoelectronic, and laser devices and systems at enterprises and companies, such as:
- Joint-Stock Company "Peleng";
- STC "LEMT";
- Vavilov Minsk Mechanical Plant and other enterprises of BelOMO;
- Enterprise of PLANAR Corporation "KBTEM-ОМО";
- JV "Ceiss-BelОМО";
- JSC "SolarLS", JSC "Solar-TII";
- UE "Izovac";
- JV "Lotis-TII";
- FE "Beltex-Optic".
Training is focused on the following aspects of laser technologies: methods of the optical system computation, design of optical and laser devices, optical manufacture technology, and applications of optical and laser systems in modern industrial technologies.
The academic staff of the Department consists of 14 lecturers, including 5 Professors and 6 Associate Professors. Educational facilities comprise 7 laboratories, including Laser Engineering Lab, Optical Systems Lab, Optoelectronic Devices Lab, Device Assembly and Adjustment Lab, etc. Seeking to further improve the resource base, the Department established a branch at JSC "Peleng".
The main scientific interests of the Department are as follows:
- Novel solid-state laser materials and laser systems;
- Promising specular optical systems;
- Devices and technologies for high-precision processing of glass and single crystals surfaces;
- Optoelectronic devices for remote sensing of the earth.
The Department closely cooperates with the BNTU Research Center for Optical Materials and Technologies, the leading scientific center in the field of novel laser materials and solid-state lasers. The BNTU students have a wonderful opportunity to train, conduct research, and prepare their diploma projects using the Center’s lab facilities.
The Department and the Center for Optical Materials and Technologies cooperate with the leading international research centers in the field of novel laser technologies, namely with Institute of General Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences; Institute of Laser Physics, Hamburg University; St. Andrews University (UK), Vavilov Optical State Institute (Russia, St.-Petersburg), etc. The Department researchers take part in joint projects with these institutions.
