The Branch of the BNTU «Institute of Improvement of Professional Skills and Staff Retraining on New Directions of Engineering, Technology and Economy» (hereinafter – Institute) was established in 1987, and it is a separate structural unit of the BNTU. The first director for over 20 years had been Gennady S. Kruglik, Professor, PhD in Physics and Mathematics. The Institute is currently headed by Oleg P. Reut, Professor, PhD in Engineering.

The main purpose of the Institute is staff training and retraining at the levels of higher and secondary special education, retraining of senior students of higher education institutions, vocational education of unemployed workers.
During the time the Institute has been in operation more than 6,000 specialists have been retrained, over 40,000 have advanced within their qualification, and more than 4,000 trainees have done vocational training.

The structure of the Institute includes 3 departments and 2 research laboratories. 5 Professors and 8 Associate Professors are on the staff of the Branch of the Institute, the total number of teaching staff is about 60. Annually more than 200 highly qualified university professors, leading experts from research institutes, ministries and other organizations are involved into the education process. The Institute has modern education and technical facilities, several computer classes with Internet access.

The Institute also conducts research work (R&D) on a number of subject areas of science, technology and economics, successfully participates in the government support programs of basic and applied research.

Since 1987 the Institute published 12 monographs, over 400 scientific articles and 200 abstracts, received more than 70 patents. During this period, 6 collaborators have successfully defended their doctoral dissertations, 8 - PhD thesis, 7 got the academic rank of Professor and 5 - the academic rank of Associate Professor.
